Marine Education
Ecosystem in focus: Watamu Marine Protected Areas

Environmental Education with the community and schools
Here, we work closely with fishermen and other stakeholders who have a direct connection to the Watamu Marine Protected Areas, recognizing their crucial role in the park’s health. Our collaborative efforts extend to local schools, where we provide education about the unique and vital ecosystem of the Marine Park, with a particular focus on the often misunderstood roles of sharks and rays. To complement classroom learning, we organize guided tours within the Reserve, offering students an immersive experience and the chance to witness firsthand the fascinating diversity of marine life. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of shared ownership and ensures that everyone feels valued and part of our team dedicated to protecting the Watamu Marine Protected Areas.

Artisanal fishing Competition
Our annual fishing competitions are a cornerstone of our efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices and build a thriving fishing community. These aren’t just about catching the biggest fish; they’re carefully designed to encourage responsible fishing methods that ensure the long-term health of the marine ecosystem. We work closely with local fishing communities to establish rules and guidelines that prioritize conservation, such as catch limits, size restrictions, and the use of specific fishing gear that minimizes bycatch. These competitions serve as a practical demonstration of how sustainable fishing can be both successful and environmentally responsible.
Beyond the focus on sustainability, these events play a vital role in fostering a stronger sense of community among the fishermen. They provide a unique opportunity for fishermen from different areas and backgrounds to come together, share experiences, and build a sense of belonging. The competitions create a friendly and collaborative atmosphere, encouraging interaction and knowledge exchange. This not only strengthens relationships within the fishing community but also facilitates the sharing of best practices and traditional knowledge related to fishing and marine conservation. The events often include educational components, workshops, or demonstrations on sustainable fishing techniques, further reinforcing the importance of responsible stewardship of the marine environment. By bringing everyone together, these fishing competitions create a sense of shared purpose and contribute to a more united and resilient fishing community, working together to protect the resources they depend on. The competitions often culminate in celebrations and prize-giving ceremonies, further strengthening community bonds and recognizing the contributions of local fishermen
